18 Day Guided Sturgis Tour, 31st July – 18th August 2008

SturgisA fantastic 18 day tour to the huge Sturgis Bike Rally, starting in Las Vegas & including Yellowstone, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley & the iconic Route 66.

Day 1. 31/7 Fly into Las Vegas, Nevada. Welcome meal at the Harley-Davidson café, just to get us well & truly in the mood! Stay 2 nights.

Day 2. 1/8 Free day. Check out The Strip, have a little flutter, & acclimatise.

Day 3. 2/8 Transfer to Eaglerider for opening to collect bikes & support vehicle. Heading north on Lake Valley scenic route, stop around Pioche for lunch. Ride through Great Basin National Park, to overnight at Ely. 249 miles

Day 4. 3/8 Head off towards Wells, & after lunch we cross the state line at Jackpot(!) into Idaho, across the Snake River Plains to stay the night at Twin Falls. 254 miles

Days 5 . 4/8 Passing the Craters of the Moon National Park, we continue through Idaho Falls & cross into Wyoming & the Yellowstone National Park There’s loads to do here; you can visit the Old Faithful geyser, have a ride on horseback, a trip out on a chuckwagon for supper, & keep an eye out for Yogi & BooBoo! 275 miles

Day 6. 5/8 Today we’ll ride through Yellowstone, with a stop off at Old Faithful, then head east through the Sleeping Giant Mountains, on our way to Cody for our overnight stay, & maybe visit the Buffalo Bill Historic Centre. 132 miles

Day 7. 6/8 Leaving Cody, we’ll be skirting the Bighorn Mountains on our way to Buffalo for the night. We’re close to Indian country now, so it may be prudent to form the bikes into a circle & post a watch at nights! 182 miles

Days 8, 9 & 10. 7-8-9/8 We’re heading for Sturgis today, & crossing the state line into South Dakota. We’ll be in the Black Hills Region for the next 3 days, & our accommodation here is in the frontier town of Deadwood, approximately 15 miles from Sturgis. Over the next few days you’re going to see more Harleys than you’ve ever seen before, but if you feel you’ve overdosed on steel & chrome, you can always head out to the Badlands National Park, or visit Mt Rushmore or the Crazy Horse Monument. 218 miles

Day 11. 10/8 Today we’re heading back into Wyoming & southbound through Custer, then later we’ll ride along part of the notoriously dangerous old Deadwood-Cheyenne stagecoach route, where robberies, horse thefts & murders were commonplace in the late 19th century. 162 miles

Day 12 . 11/8 Continuing south into Colorado & towards Denver, we’ll be passing through the old frontier town of Fort Laramie. We’ll spend tonight at Loveland, on the edge of the beautiful Rocky Mountain National Park. 250 miles

Day 13 . 12/8 Riding west through the Rockies, we’ll be taking in all the fantastic forest & mountain scenery today. Relax in the evening at our historic hotel when we reach Glenwood Springs natural spa. 225 miles

Day 14. 13/8 Travelling south on scenic roads we continue through Colorado to Durango, passing through historic frontier & silver mining towns of yesteryear. 232 miles

Day 15. 14/8 Today we will visit four states all at once, at “Four Corners,” where Colorado, Utah, Arizona & New Mexico meet. We continue south-west into Utah today, & it should stay dry here! If time permits, we may even catch the glorious sunset over Monument Valley. We spend the night at Mexican Hat, by the San Juan River. 235 miles

Day 16 . 15/8 A morning visit to Monument Valley is not to be missed, to see the awe-inspiring formations of buttes & mesas, familiar through many films & TV adverts. We’ll cross into Arizona, & ride through the Painted Valley, then on to the Grand Canyon for our overnight stay, in plenty of time to watch the colourful sunset over the biggest hole in the ground you ever did see! 193 miles

Day 17 . 16/8 Today we join the best part of the iconic Route 66, through Seligman, Kingman & the quaint old mining town of Oatman. We overnight at Laughlin, a gambling town on the banks of the Colorado River. 245 miles

Day 18 . 17/8 Then it’s back to Las Vegas riding across the Hoover Dam, which contains enough concrete to make a two-lane highway from San Fransisco to New York! Time to return the bikes, & later join up for a fond farewell meal, & try to win the holiday money back on the tables! 130 miles

A deposit of £500 per person secures your place.
